In the morning, you will be picked up in Pristina and transferred by minibus to historic Gjakova. Here, we will stop for coffee in the city’s reconstructed 16th century bazaar, which showcases some of the country’s best local handicrafts. After coffee, we will continue our journey across the border to the quaint Albanian town of Bajram Curri, which was one of the most remote places in Europe through much of the 20th century. We will walk through the center of the town to visit the Statue of Bajram Curri an Albanian national hero of 20th century.
On the way, we will see bunkers from communist era. Fearing an invasion from his former Soviet allies or Nato, dictator Hoxha had enough concrete bunkers built to stop an army of millions.
Finally, the stunning Valbona Valley will open up before us. Said to be one of the last unspoiled corners of Europe, the valley is the heart of Albania’s wild Accursed Mountains. Lunch will be served in a local restaurant that specializes in Northern Albanian cuisine, including goat roasted on the spit. After lunch, we will explore the area’s unique flora and fauna during an easy 4 hours trek toward the Source of River Valbona. Following our trek, the minibus will return you to Pristina (approx. three hour drive).
